1979 Jimmy Wyble Guitar Lesson - Combining Scales to expand technique and harmonic awareness
...The infinite possibilities of the scale with all its variations are indeed astounding...By using two scales at once we can add another dimension to our pursuit of efficiency and harmonic awareness. For instance let's combine the G and E flat scales in the following picking exercise...

1979 Lee Ritenour Rock Guitar Fundamentals: Arpeggios - the key to good technique
...The point of this article is not to introduce you to arpeggios. What I would like to make you aware of is the fact that scales and arpeggios are essentially the same thing and do in fact end up in the same places...I don't care if you're a rock, jazz, classical, or country guitarist, practice the shit out of those arpeggios. It will pay huge dividends, musically and financially...

1979 Larry Coryell Contemporary Guitar Lesson - Compliments and Explanations
...This month I'll be discussing two subjects: When I write a song, sometimes what I eventually play isn't exactly like what I originally wrote; the second topic covers different ways that chords can be written...there are times you'll write something so difficult that when you actually play it on a record, it comes out different - like the eight bar on my song "Birdfingers" on the first "Eleventh House" album. What I wrote is shown in Ex. 1, but it came out sounding like Ex. 2 to my transcriber...

1979 Arnie Berle Guitar Lesson - Fretboard Basics - Combining Modal Chords
...last month I gave an example of a composition based on the A phrygian mode, called "Ophelia," by Mike Santiago. It was taken from the album "White Trees" by Santiago and his group "Entity." This month I want to show you the exact chords and voicings that Mike used on the record...

1979 Howard Roberts Jazz Guitar Improvisation Lesson - Getting Bends Under Control
This month's article is a return to the basic moves series that began with the February '78 issue of GP and continued through March '79. 1979 Jeff Newman Pedal Steel Guitar Lesson - How to use chromatic strings
If you play pedal steel guitar you are undoubtedly aware of what the term "chromatics" means. When I first started playing there wasn't yet such a thing as chromatic tuning on any steel guitar...I finally learned that they are the first two strings on the E9 tuning, F# and D#...The true E9 tuning starts on the third string (G#), and the chromatic strings are on the outside. This in itself causes most new pedal steel fans to give up the ghost when they first start to play...

1974 Ad for The Guitar Study Center.
The only thing small about The Guitar Study Center is the size of the classes. Workshops of 5 or 6 people meet once a week at the Guitar Study Center. You study with musicians like Eddie Simon, Director of the Center, touring guitarist of Simon and Garfunkel. David Cohen of Country Joe and The Fish. Ron Parker, jazz guitarist. Barry Kornfield, New York studio musician. If you've been playing the same 5 or 6 chords for the last 5 or 6 years, workshops in folk, jazz, classical, blues and rock are forming now. This term's expanding curriculum includes courses in bass guitar, blues harp and a new Songwriting Course, specifically designed from the guitarist's point of view. Why not spend your summer learning to make music?
