Guitar Heroes - From Blues to Rock and Beyond - Jon Derengowski

From the pioneers of blues to today s arena rock stars and cutting-edge indie talents, Guitar Heroes explores the lives, career highs (and lows), and common links among a diverse selection of the world s greatest guitarists. With a special emphasis on playing style and technique—as well as on some of history s truly legendary guitars—each hero s mark on music is captured alongside brilliant shots of a guitar virtuoso in action.

Also highlighted are essential, career-defining albums and important awards and notable honors won by each artist. Categorized by genre—including Blues and R&B Rock and Roll; Pop; Folk and Country; Hard Rock and Metal; Alternative, Indie, and Punk; and Jazz, World, and Progressive—Guitar Heroes is a compelling introduction to some of music s most formidable axmen and women, ideal for new guitar enthusiasts and established fans alike.

The research and writing of Guitar Heroes represents the diploma for an overwhelmingly thorough—but late-blooming—musical education for author Jon Derengowski. Raised just outside Chicago in a house littered with inexpertly played trumpets, keyboards, drums—and even the odd guitar handmade by his incredibly talented father—Jon credits a few fateful mix CDs given to him before college with saving him from a life spent listening to top 40 radio and pop-punk.

An edacious listener and fan, he keeps a reasonably close ear to the ground and habitually reads the Internet s innumerable music blogs. His current tastes align with such artists as Animal Collective, Joanna Newsom, and Los Campesinos!—but he thanks this project for bringing the Beatles, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and other classics into a new, thrilling light.

Following a brief, enlightening stint as a coffee-fetching, golf cart driving Hollywood assistant, Jon is happy to call New York City his home.
